Women’s Volleyball Grabs Two Wins at Keystone Clash

La Plume, Pa.- The Marywood University women's volleyball team earned a pair of sweeps at the Keystone Clash hosted by Keystone College Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers defeated Alfred State and Wilson College to improve to 16-2 on the season.

The Pacers defeated Alfred State by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-19.

Carolina Samaniego led Marywood with eight kills, while Taylor Hallam, Genevieve Pollock, and Gracee Work each added six. Ayla Bransford recorded 13 assists and four block assists. Piper Herauf dished out 15 assists and served four aces. Catie Woolf paced the Pacers defensively with 17 digs.

The Pacers and Pioneers battled through a back-and-forth opening set, with the teams eventually tied at nine.

Marywood then regained the lead behind a kill from Hallam before Bransford capitalized on Alfred State errors to push the advantage. After the Pioneers pulled even at 13, the Pacers responded with a 6-1 run, highlighted by kills from Samaniego and Work, a service ace from Hallam and a kill from Taylor Howard.

Alfred State trimmed the deficit to 19-16, but Marywood answered with five straight points. Bransford finished the set with a kill.

The Pacers carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to an early 9-4 advantage. Alfred State gradually chipped away at the deficit, eventually pulling even at 13 once more.

The Pioneers would score six of the next eight points to take a 19-15 lead. Marywood responded with five straight points to regain the lead at 20-19. Alfred State scored twice more to go back in front, but the Pacers held on down the stretch. Pollock capped the set with another kill.

Alfred State grabbed an early 4-1 lead in the third set before Marywood battled back. The Pioneers responded with three straight points to take an 8-4 advantage, but the Pacers continued to chip away, tying the set at seven.

Alfred State again moved in front, building a 12-8 lead, but Marywood answered with four of the next five points to pull within two. A service ace from Andrea Fraga later helped the Pacers trim their deficit to one. Alfred State responded with a kill to take a 16-14 lead before Marywood rattled off three consecutive points to take its first lead of the set.

With the Pacers holding a 21-19 advantage, Marywood scored the final four points of the set with Hallam and Pollock combining for a block on match point.

The Pacers earned the victory by set scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-18.

Hallam led the Pacers with 12 kills on 15 attacks, hitting .733 for the match, while adding three digs, one solo block and one block assist for 13.5 points. Pollock added eight kills, while Samaniego finished with six kills, three service aces and a team-high eight digs. Herauf directed the Marywood offense with 18 assists.

Marywood and Wilson battled through a close opening set, with the teams tied at three, four, and seven before the Pacers began to create some separation. After Wilson took an 8-7 lead, Marywood answered with three consecutive points to move in front 10-7.

The Pacers continued to build their advantage, pushing the lead to 16-11. Marywood then used another strong stretch to take a 23-14 lead. The Pacers finished the set with consecutive kills from Work and Pollock to claim the first set.

After Marywood scored the first point of the second set, the Phoenix responded with a 4-0 run. The Pacers gradually clawed their way back midway through the set before taking control late.

Up 20-16, Marywood scored four consecutive points, featuring two kills from Bransford, a service ace from Samaniego and a solo block from Billie Leet to force set point. Wilson kept the set alive with three straight points, but a service error gave the Pacers a 2-0 lead in the match.

Both teams traded points during the first few rallies of the third set. Marywood trailed 5-7 before going on a 5-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. The Pacers continued to build their advantage as they took a 22-14 lead.

Wilson scored four unanswered points, including three service aces and a kill, to cut the deficit to 22-18. Marywood responded by closing out the set with the final three points, securing the victory and completing the sweep.

Saturday's matchups also saw Hallam reach a career milestone as the senior recorded her 1,000th career point.

Marywood hosts King's College in a MAC Freedom contest on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m.
