Marywood jumped out to an early lead in the opening set before King's answered with a strong stretch midway through the frame. The Pacers found themselves trailing 19-15 before mounting a comeback.

Marywood scored six straight points to turn the deficit into a 22-17 advantage, highlighted by a pair of kills from Pollock and a service ace from Woolf. The Monarchs battled back to tie the set at 22, but the Pacers closed on three consecutive points to take the opener.

The second set was another back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than three points through the early stages.
