Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University closed its men's basketball regular season with a 67-65 loss to Marymount University on Saturday afternoon at the Insalaco Arena. The Pacers will compete in the Atlantic East Conference men's basketball playoffs as a No. 5 seed.
The Pacers will travel to No. 4 Neumann University on Monday in the first round.
Andrew Quinn scored 25 points, including five 3-pointers. Quinn finished 8 of 11 from the field and 5 of 6 from 3-point range to lead all scorers.
The Pacers (13-12, 6-8 Atlantic East) shot 50 percent from 3-point range (11 of 22) and held a rebounding edge, 32-29, but committed 20 turnovers that led to 19 Marymount points. The Saints (16-8, 13-1) overcame a shaky second-half shooting performance from beyond the arc (0 of 8) by making 9 of 15 free throws in the final 20 minutes and outscoring Marywood's bench 29-13.
Marywood trailed 32-29 at halftime after a back-and-forth opening period that featured seven lead changes and five ties. Shilo Bivins opened the scoring with a 3-pointer 41 seconds in off a Quinn assist, and the Pacers led by as many as three early. Quinn was particularly effective inside and from deep, while Michel Loftin added a fast-break layup and Joe Macciocco connected on a 3-pointer to keep pace.
Marymount answered with interior scoring — finishing with 36 points in the paint — and forced 11 first-half turnovers. The Saints took a three-point lead into the break after Reuben McEachern's jumper at the horn.
The Pacers erased the deficit quickly in the second half. Collin Himmelberg tied the score at 34 with a 3-pointer and the ensuing free throw at the 15:49 mark to give Marywood a brief one-point lead. The game remained tight, with neither team able to pull away.
Marywood trailed by seven with less than nine minutes remaining before tightening defensively and chipping away at the lead. Quinn hit a 3-pointer to make it 47-43 with 8:58 left, and Macciocco added four free throws in the closing minutes. Quinn's 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining cut the deficit to 66-64, and his free throw made it a one-point game at 66-65.
Marymount answered with two free throws from McEachern with seven seconds left to push the margin to 67-65. Loftin's potential game-tying jumper at the buzzer was blocked by Carl Highsmith Jr., sealing the outcome.
Loftin added 12 points and six rebounds, Bivins contributed eight points and a game-high eight rebounds with two blocks, and Macciocco scored nine off the bench.
Marymount was led by McEachern's 17 points and five assists, while Ronier Peters added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
