Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University women's basketball dropped a 62-57 decision to Marymount University on Saturday afternoon at the Insalaco Arena. The Pacers will enter the Atlantic East Conference playoffs as a No. 3 seed.
The Pacers will rematch second-seeded Marymount on Wednesday in the Atlantic East semifinals. Marywood will take on the Saints at 6 p.m. in Virginia.
Megan Cavoli scored a team-high 15 points and Olivia Ciullo added 13 with three 3 pointers. Marywood could not overcome a 50-31 rebounding deficit.
The Pacers (13-12, 8-6 Atlantic East) shot 42.9 percent from 3-point range (9 of 21) and forced 19 Marymount turnovers that led to 18 points, but the Saints (13-12, 10-4) dominated the glass with 22 second-chance points and made 18 of 30 free throws to secure the Atlantic East victory.
The game featured eight lead changes and six ties. Marymount jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a Kaylah Barr 3-pointer and a fast-break layup by Jaylah Thompson. Marywood answered with back-to-back 3-pointers from Mia Blume to tie it at 9-9, then took its first lead at 12-11 on another Blume triple.
Marymount closed the first half on a 7-2 run, including a Catie Kolwey layup and free throws, to lead 35-31 at the break. Kolwey finished with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Chandler Eddleton added 11 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
The third quarter was a defensive struggle, with both teams combining for just 23 points. Marywood cut the deficit to 44-38 on a Cavoli 3-pointer, but Marymount responded with a 6-0 spurt capped by Eddleton's tip-in to lead by 11.
The fourth quarter turned into a seesaw. Marywood rallied to take a 49-48 lead on two Ciullo free throws, then pushed the advantage to 53-50 on a Cavoli layup. Marymount answered with a 3-pointer from Ciullo to tie it at 56-56 with 1:59 left. After a pair of Kolwey free throws gave the Saints a one-point edge, Marywood tied it again at 57-57 on Cavoli's free throw with 57 seconds remaining.
The Saints sealed the win with two Eddleton free throws and two more from Barr after a technical foul on Marywood with two seconds left. A final turnover by Marywood ended the game.
Ciullo led the Pacers with six rebounds and two assists. Blume added nine points with three 3-pointers, while Alli Griscavage chipped in five points and three rebounds off the bench. Marywood's bench contributed 13 points.
Kolwey and Barr combined for 38 points and 19 rebounds to pace Marymount, which improved to 10-4 in conference play.
