Pacers Fire on All Cylinders in Second Half to Cage Eagles

Smith leads Pacers with nine points

Huntingdon, Pa. — Marywood University women's lacrosse used a five-goal run to break away for a 17-12 win over Juniata College on Friday. Tied at half, the Pacers outscored the Eagles 8-3 in the second half. 

Marywood wins its third consecutive game. 

Kaitlyn Smith led the Pacers with nine points. Smith scored five goals and four assists. 

Avery Meighan had an all-around game with four goals and three assists. She matched her points total with seven ground balls. Meighan added 10 draw controls and six caused turnovers.

Natalie Yilanjian added four goals, and Danica Kelly finished with a brace. 

Defensively, Alli Duncan provided four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. 

In net, Jenna Scala came in as a substitute to earn the win. Scala made seven saves in 35 minutes. 

The Pacers outshot the Eagles by a 35-27 margin. Juniata had a 16-13 advantage in draw controls, while the Pacers were poised with a 28-21 edge in ground balls. 

Marywood got off to a hot start with three goals in the opening 3 minutes, 28 seconds. The Pacers closed the first quarter with a 7-2 lead, thanks to Meighan's goal with 1:58 remaining. 

Juniata stormed back with five straight goals to tie the game. Ella McGlaughlin scored three of those, capping the run with 6:25 left in the half. Shortly after Smith recaptured the Pacers' lead seconds later, Juniata had a pair of goals from McGlaughlin and Madi Van Zant to take the lead with 79 seconds left in the half. 

Meighan scored with 1:19 remaining to send the game to halftime even at nine goals apiece. 

Marywood (4-5) bounced back from coach Krista Strausser's halftime speech, netting four unanswered goals in the third quarter. Smith gave the Pacers the lead at 13:32 from a Meighan assist. The Pacers produced a pair of woman-up goals from Smith and Meighan, and Yilanjian delivered a score to make it 13-9. 

After nine minute of scoreless lacrosse, Juniata earned its way back into the game with goals from Elayna Stubbe and McGlaughlin to begin the fourth. Marywood's slim two-goal lead turned into five over a 10-minute span. Carly Lynch fed a pass for a Smith woman-up goal at 8:47. Then, Kelly and Yilanjian both scored to provided Marywood with a comfortable 16-11 lead with just over four minutes remaining. 

Marywood hosts University of Lynchburg on Thursday at 3 p.m.
