Pacers Can’t Overcome Fast Start in Loss to Penn College

SCRANTON, Pa. — The Marywood University men's lacrosse team could not overcome an early deficit as it fell to Penn College, 13-6, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pacers (4-5) found themselves trailing just minutes into the contest, as Penn College opened the game with three quick goals and eventually built a 6-3 advantage by the end of the first quarter.

Marywood responded with a brief surge in the opening period. Alexander Votra put the Pacers on the board, and Sean Bonhag followed with a man-up goal off an assist from Shaun Howey to cut the deficit to one. Michael Caputo later added a goal to keep Marywood within reach heading into the second quarter.

The Pacers continued to battle early in the second, pulling within 6-4 on Votra's second goal of the game, again set up by Howey. However, Penn College answered with a decisive run, scoring three of the final four goals of the half to take a 9-5 lead into the break.

Marywood's offense stalled in the second half, as the Pacers were held scoreless in the third quarter while Penn College extended its lead to seven.
Despite generating opportunities, Marywood struggled to maintain possession, finishing 16-for-30 on clearing attempts and committing 25 turnovers.

Ricky Strobel led the Pacers with two goals, including the team's lone tally of the fourth quarter. Votra also finished with two goals, while Bonhag contributed a goal and an assist. Howey paced the team with two assists.

Defensively, goalkeeper Colin Trainor turned in a strong performance with 18 saves.

Penn College's offense was paced by Owen Kupsey, who finished with four goals and three assists, while Elliot Dotson added four goals and an assist.
