Softball Sweeps Elmira in Home Opener

Scranton, Pa.- The Marywood University softball team opened its home slate with two exciting wins as the Pacers defeated Elmira College 6-5 in walk-off fashion in game one followed by a 13-9 victory in game two.

Game One: Elmira 5, Marywood 6

Elmira drew first blood in the second inning, plating three runs as Kendall Curreri's triple drove in two and Jenna Burns added an RBI double to make it 3‑0. The Soaring Eagles added another run in the third on a Teona Cruz solo homer to push their lead to 4‑0.

Marywood answered in the fourth when Amber Little delivered an RBI double that brought home Lauryn Notari. Elmira added a fifth run in the fifth, but the Pacers didn't back down. In the sixth, Marywood mounted its comeback: Notari scored on a throwing error, Little drove in a run with a single, and Marley Sarafinko's RBI knock brought the Pacers within one.

The go‑ahead moment came in the seventh inning. Mia Antolino delivered a clutch two‑RBI single to score both Notari and Renee McDonald, sealing a dramatic 6‑5 victory for Marywood.

It was a complete team effort at the plate for the Pacers, who collected 15 hits. Notari led the offense with four hits and was a home run away from the cycle.

Emily Dubisz earned the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings and striking out four.

Game Two: Elmira 9, Marywood 13

Elmira struck first in the top of the opening frame, plating three runs on a pair of RBI hits that brought early energy to the Soaring Eagles. But Marywood answered in a big way at the bottom of the first, scoring six runs highlighted by an inside‑the‑park grand slam from Ariana Shellman, turning the game on its head and giving the Pacers an early lead.

The second inning saw the back‑and‑forth continue, with Elmira pulling back within one before Marywood again responded with a multi‑run frame. Tori Para added a one-run double and McDonald responded later with an RBI single.

Marywood's offense didn't let up in the middle innings. Sarafinko delivered clutch extra‑base hits, and timely run production by several hitters allowed the Pacers to build a comfortable lead. Elmira continued to chip away with solo runs in the fifth and seventh, but each push was met by another Marywood rally.

Sarafinko and Shellman both tallied three hits in the second game of this afternoon's doubleheader. On the pitching side, Megan Linkhorst got the win as she pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief and fanned two batters.

The Pacers are on the road Monday, heading to Albright College.
