Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Gwynedd Mercy in Atlantic East Opener

Gwynedd Valley, Pa.- The Marywood University men's lacrosse team opened Atlantic East Conference play on Saturday afternoon but was unable to overcome a decisive second quarter surge in an 8-3 loss to Gwynedd Mercy University.

The Pacers (5-7, 0-1 AEC) battled evenly through the opening 15 minutes, responding to an early goal by Gwynedd Mercy with an unassisted strike from Ricky Strobel to tie the game.

The game shifted in the second period as Gwynedd Mercy seized control. The Griffins scored four times in the quarter, including a pair from Landen Ciran and a man-up goal by Josh Devine, to build a 5-1 halftime advantage.

Gwynedd Mercy extended its lead early in the third quarter behind two more goals from Devine. Devine finished with a game-high four goals, while David Crespo added three points on a goal and two assists.

Marywood showed resilience late in the third, stringing together its best offensive stretch of the day. Osten Grigas got the Pacers back on the board off an assist from Rocco Stefalo, and Sean Bonhag followed less than three minutes later with a goal set up by Ben Meighan.

However, that would be as close as Marywood would get. Gwynedd Mercy controlled the tempo in the fourth, adding an insurance goal midway through the period while its defense and goalkeeper Alexander Guardino held the Pacers scoreless over the final 15 minutes.

Marywood finished with a slight edge in ground balls (23-20) and nearly matched Gwynedd Mercy in shots (32-33).

Strobel, Grigas, and Bonhag each scored once for Marywood, while Meighan and Stefalo recorded assists. Trainor made six saves in goal.

Marywood heads to Montclair State on Wednesday.
