Men’s Tennis Edges Neumann to Open Conference Play

Scranton, Pa.- The Marywood University men's tennis team edged Neumann University in a tightly contested Atlantic East Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon, using a strong doubles showing and clutch performances in singles to secure a 4-3 victory at the Pacer Courts.

The Pacers set the tone early by claiming the doubles point, winning two of three matches. The top pairing of Alex Corcoran and Gavin Gagliardi controlled play throughout a 6-3 win, while Zane Smoker and Isaac Carpenter added a 6-4 victory at No. 2. Neumann avoided the sweep with a win at third doubles, but Marywood carried a 1-0 lead into singles.

Gagliardi extended that advantage with a commanding straight-sets win at No. 1 singles, dispatching Mike Brown 6-4, 6-3. Neumann responded quickly at No. 2, where Adam Barisa earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Corcoran to tighten the team score.

The match turned into a back-and-forth battle from there. Smoker delivered a pivotal point for the Pacers at No. 3 singles, outlasting James Leuzzi in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Neumann answered again at No. 4, where Luca Troilo rallied for a three-set win over Carpenter, taking the deciding super tiebreak to even the match.

With the score knotted, Neumann gained another point at No. 5 as Logan Gorbitz defeated Fred Kloss in straight sets. That left the outcome riding on the final match on court.
At No. 6 singles, Marywood's Aidan Brunner rose to the occasion, delivering a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win over Chandler Wolf to clinch the match for the Pacers.

Marywood resumes conference play on Thursday, Apr. 2 when they head to Pratt Institute.
