Pacers Comeback Bid Denied in 10-8 Loss to Gwynedd Mercy

Scranton, Pa.- A late comeback wasn't enough to overcome a devastating ninth inning as the Marywood University baseball dropped a 10-8 decision to Gwynedd Mercy on Friday afternoon.

The Pacers showed resilience throughout, erasing a three-run deficit in the eighth inning and rallying again in the ninth, but a five-run outburst by Gwynedd Mercy in the top half of the final frame proved to be the difference in a back-and-forth contest.

Marywood (16-10, 4-3 AEC) collected 13 hits, with Joel Ayers leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring three times and adding a solo home run. Aj Kuzior delivered the biggest blows offensively, driving in four runs on two home runs, including a game-tying shot in the eighth inning.

After falling behind 5-2 through four innings, Marywood chipped away when Ayers launched a solo homer in the third.

The game turned in the eighth. Ayers sparked the rally with a double before Kuzior crushed a two-run homer down the right-field line to pull Marywood within one. Later in the inning, Tanner Vicendese came through with a clutch RBI single to tie the game at 5-5.

With momentum on their side, the Pacers handed the ball to Noah Trager in the ninth, but Gwynedd Mercy's lineup capitalized. The Griffins strung together five hits in the inning, including a two-run single from Deven Ross and an RBI single by Jimmy DeCarlo, while also benefiting from a pair of sacrifice flies and a balk to plate five runs and reclaim a 10-5 advantage.

Marywood refused to go quietly. In the bottom of the ninth, Ayers singled to set the stage for Kuzior, who launched his second two-run homer of the game to cut the deficit to three. Ethan Reccek followed with a solo shot to bring the Pacers within two.

However, Gwynedd Mercy reliever Zachary Freas retired the next two batters, including a game-ending double play, to secure the save and halt the comeback.

Despite the loss, Marywood's offense showed depth, with multiple hits from Reccek and Mike Biskup, while Vicendese added an RBI. On the mound, Austin Bausman took the start, allowing five runs (four earned) over 4.1 innings, while Brett Kugler provided two scoreless innings of relief before the ninth inning setback.

Marywood travels to Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Griffins with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
