Take Me to Church: First Career Homer Boosts Pacers Over Lions

Marywood wins third straight game

Scranton, Pa. — Freshman Watson Church hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning to lift Marywood University to an 11-9 win over Penn State Berks Monday in non-conference baseball. Church's first career round tripper gave the Pacers their third straight win.

In a tie game, Church turned on the first pitch of the bottom eighth inning. His hit landed inside of the right foul pole to give Marywood an 8-7 lead.

Marywood (19-10) added another three runs in the inning. On the next at-bat, Mike Biskup hustled — losing his helmet somewhere along the way — for a triple to left-center field. Tanner Vicendese let down an RBI bunt that was botched by the pitcher and allowed Biskup to easily score. Three batters later, Jaylen Robinson hit a bases-loaded, -clearing single to center field to stretch Marywood's lead to four runs.

After the Lions scored two early in the top of the ninth, Caleb Fisher closed the door by forcing a groundout and infield pop-up.

Church's go-ahead dinger erased eight left on base for the first baseman. He finished 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI.

Biskup was a home run shy of a cycle. He was 4 for 5 with three runs and three extra-base hits. Biskup hit a double and two triples.

Robinson came in as a replacement designated hitter to hit 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Returning to the lineup for the first time in exactly a month, Robinson is hitting .571 on the season.

Bruder went 3 for 6 with an RBI. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Bruder struck out looking — his first strikeout in 127 plate appearances this season. Heading into today's game, Bruder was tied with Old Westbury's Joseph Torres (68 ABs) as the toughest to strikeout in NCAA Division III.

Logan Vakiener picked up his first win as a Marywood pitcher. He threw a scoreless eighth inning, allowing just one hit in a speedy 11-pitch inning.

Billy Fox, Rowan Galiotto and Kieran Beman each three scoreless relief innings.

Falling into an early two-run hole, Maywood scored two runs in the bottom half of the first inning to even the score. AJ Kuzior singled through the left side to bring in a run, and Biskup landed a ball in left center to square the score at two apiece.

Marywood added another run in the second inning on Ayers' RBI fielder's choice.

Penn State Berks' Bryce Kelly tied the game back up at 3-3 with a solo shot in the third.

Marywood doubled its run total in the third. Biskup hit a leadoff triple and scored on Dayton Aguiar's sacrifice fly. Robinson singled to center field to bring in a run. In the next at-bat, Bruder singled to left center for the Pacers' sixth run.

The Lions' tied the game on a Michael DeRichie grand slam that carried in the wind down the right field.

Marywood hosts Drew University on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
