Offensive Explosion Powers Women’s Lacrosse Past Gwynedd Mercy

Scranton, Pa.- The Marywood University women's lacrosse team wasted little time asserting control and never looked back, rolling to a dominant 25-4 victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday afternoon at Pacer Turf Field.

The Pacers (9-5, 3-0 AEC) overwhelmed Gwynedd Mercy from the opening draw, using a fast-paced attack and relentless pressure to build an 11-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Marywood outshot the Griffins 39-10 and controlled possession throughout, highlighted by a commanding 25-6 edge in draw controls.

Avery Meighan led the offensive surge with five goals and two assists, while Kaitlyn Smith orchestrated the attack with three goals and a game-high eight assists. Natalie Yilanjian added three goals and four assists, and Alivia Backes chipped in three goals as Marywood showcased its depth with 11 different goal scorers.

After Gwynedd Mercy briefly tied the game at 1-1 early in the first quarter, Marywood responded with a 10-0 run that broke the game open.

Marywood continued to extend its lead in the second quarter, pushing the margin to 16-3 by halftime. The Pacers' defense limited Gwynedd Mercy's opportunities, holding the Griffins to just two shots in the second period and forcing 19 turnovers overall.

The Griffins (2-11, 1-2 AEC) managed only one goal in each of the final two quarters. Elena Colliluori led Gwynedd Mercy with two goals, while Rebecca Gordon and Rylee Baird each added one.

Defensively, Marywood received four saves from goalkeeper Jenna Scala, while the team collected 18 ground balls and consistently disrupted clears. The Pacers converted 8 of 9 clearing attempts.

Marywood's balanced attack continued into the second half, with goals spread across the lineup as the lead swelled to 20-4 after three quarters. The Pacers added five more in the fourth to cap the decisive win.

Marywood remains home to face Neumann University on Friday, Apr. 10 at 3 p.m.
