Pacers Open Keuka Invitational with Two Sweeps

Keuka Park, N.Y.- The Marywood University women's volleyball team picked up two sweeps Friday afternoon as they defeated Keuka College and Keystone College in three sets in the opening day of the Keuka International.

Marywood 3, Keuka 0
The Pacers were victorious over the host Golden Wolves by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-21.

Marywood opened the match by building an early 8-4 advantage and continued to pull away in the opening set. The Pacers used a strong stretch midway through the frame to take a 14-7 lead before extending the margin to 21-10. Marywood closed the set on a 4-0 run.

Keuka pushed back in the second set, taking an early 3-1 lead and later tying the score at 9-9. Marywood responded with a 7-2 run to take a 16-11 advantage. The Pacers stretched the lead to 21-15 before Keuka mounted a late rally, cutting the deficit to one at 21-20. Marywood regained control, however, scoring the final four points to take the set.

The third set proved to be the most competitive of the afternoon. The teams traded points throughout the opening stages, with the score tied at 5-5, 7-7, and 8-8. Marywood eventually established a 14-11 lead and later held a 19-17 advantage, but Keuka answered to tie the set at 19-19.

The Pacers maintained their composure down the stretch. Genevieve Pollock put Marywood ahead 20-19 with a kill, and after Keuka tied the score again at 20-20, Marywood scored five of the final six points to finish the sweep.

Carolina Samaniego led the Pacers offensively with 10 kills on 18 attacks, hitting .444 for the match. She also added seven digs and a block. Billie Leet contributed six kills and added four blocks, while Pollock finished with five kills, six digs, a solo block and a block assist.

Ayla Bransford orchestrated the Marywood offense with 28 assists and added four kills, three service aces and 10 digs. Gracee Work chipped in four kills and seven digs, while Catie Woolf paced the defensive effort with 12 digs.

For Keuka, Nina Scott led the way with 10 kills, while Gabby Rodriguez paced the defensive effort with 16 digs. Alessandra Castañeda added six kills and nine digs for the Golden Wolves.

Marywood 3, Keystone 0
Marywood swept Keystone, 25-13, 25-17, 25-11.

Marywood took control early in the opening set, jumping out to an 8-3 advantage before extending the lead to 14-8. The Pacers continued to apply pressure and closed the set on a 5-0.

The second set followed a similar script. After Keystone scored the opening point, Marywood responded with seven consecutive points to take a 7-1 lead. The Pacers maintained their advantage throughout the set and led 18-8 before the Giants had a late rally. Marywood held off the comeback attempt and secured the set.

Keystone again grabbed the first point of the third set, but Marywood quickly answered. The Pacers turned a 3-3 tie into a 7-3 advantage and later used an 8-0 run to build a 14-6 lead. Marywood continued to pull away down the stretch, eventually reaching match point at 24-11 before Leila Toric completed the sweep with the final kill.

Leet led Marywood with nine kills on 10 attacks, producing a .900 hitting percentage. Taylor Hallam also recorded nine kills, and Work added six kills and three service aces. Pollock finished with five kills and a block, while Bransford directed the offense with 29 assists.

Woolf paced the defensive effort with eight digs, while Andrea Fraga added six.

Isabella Buonopane led the Giants with five kills, while Nakaya Cridge and Madison Woods each recorded three. Nat Reyes posted a team-high seven digs.

Marywood (3-0) wraps up Keuka Invitational play tomorrow as they face Hilbert College at 11 a.m. followed by La Roche University at 1 p.m.
