Ryan Nowell ’15 has been named head men’s lacrosse coach at Marywood University for the 2025 season, as announced by Director of Athletics and Recreation Andrew Smith. In addition to his coaching duties, Nowell will serve as the department’s Coordinator of Athletic Operations.

One of the most decorated student-athletes in program history, Nowell returns to his alma mater following a coaching career spanning all three NCAA divisions. He most recently served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Moravian University, where he also held administrative responsibilities. His coaching résumé includes assistant roles at Lafayette College, Lake Erie College, Huntingdon College, and a previous stint at Marywood.

This marks Nowell’s second head coaching position. He previously led Huntingdon College (Division III) in Montgomery, Alabama, guiding the Hawks to a 4–6 record during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

As a student-athlete at Marywood, Nowell earned 2015 Preseason All-American honors and was a four-time All-CSAC selection, including First Team (2014), Second Team (2015), and Honorable Mention (2012, 2013). He helped lead the Pacers to three Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship game appearances in four seasons. Nowell still holds the program record with 64 career starts and ranks among the program’s all-time leaders in several categories, including ground balls (218 by a non-faceoff specialist), caused turnovers (72), and total ground balls. His 93 ground balls in 2014 remain a single-season program record for a non-faceoff specialist. He also finished his career ranked sixth in CSAC/PAC history in caused turnovers.

Nowell previously served as an assistant coach for Marywood’s 2017 team that advanced to the CSAC championship game after a semifinal victory over Centenary.

At Moravian, Nowell worked as defensive coordinator during stints in 2018–19 and 2024. In 2024, he helped the Greyhounds limit opponents to just 10 goals per game while earning the No. 5 seed in the Landmark Conference postseason.

He also gained Division I experience as a volunteer assistant coach at Lafayette College (2022–23), focusing on faceoffs and defense, and served as defensive coordinator at Lake Erie College (Division II) in 2021, where he also worked in operations support within the registrar’s office.

During the summer, Nowell coaches with the USA national team at the Lisbon Lacrosse Cup in Portugal. His additional coaching experience includes roles with several club programs, including Burning River, Building Blocks Lacrosse, NEPA Pirates, and Ace Lacrosse Club.

Nowell earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Marywood in 2015 and completed his MBA at Lake Erie College in 2022.
