Marywood Earns First Win, Bests Wells 5-1

Scranton, PA - Brittany Beaton and Julie Dougherty each had two goals and Carly Bergstrom added two assists as Marywood University earned their first victory of the season with a 5-1 win over Wells College Wednesday night in non-conference field hockey action. Marywood, who also got a goal and assist from Nicole Wessner, scored two goals in the first 6:16 of the game to move to 1-2 on the year while Wells falls to 0-2.

Beaton (Bethel, PA) opened the scoring for Marywood just 4:04 into the game when she took a feed from Nicole Wessner (Hamburg, PA) for the game's first goal. Wessner then recorded her first collegiate tally when she scored unassisted on a deflected shot off a defender.

Julie Dougherty (Wading River, NY) would put Marywood up 3-0 early in the second half by finishing off a Bergstrom (Raritan, NJ) penalty corner and then Beaton would score on another Bergstrom assist when she scored in an open goal after Bergstrom sent a pass across the goalmouth.

Wells would make it 4-1 when Brittany Stanton scored unassisted at the 47:40 mark but Dougherty closed the scoring with a goal with just under a minute remaining to give Marywood the 5-1 win.

Jamie Bowman (Cheshire, CT) made four saves to earn the win for Marywood while Madeline Bass (six saves) and Amanda Catalano (0 saves) split time in goal for the Express.

Marywood returns to action Friday when they visit King's College in non-conference action. Face off is set for 4:00 pm in Wilkes-Barre Township.
