Late Goal Lifts Marywood Past Gwynedd Mercy, 3-2

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Julie Youngman's goal with 5:05 to play lifted visiting Marywood University to a thrilling 3-2 win over Gwynedd Mercy University Tuesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) women's soccer action.

The Pacers moved to 9-5 (8-1 CSAC) with the win, maintaining their lead on first place in the conference's top-seed with two games to play in the regular season. Centenary also has a 8-1 mark in the league, but the Pacers own the tiebreaker over the Cyclones by virtue of a 5-3 win over Centenary in early October.

After a dangerous direct kick from Gwynedd Mercy on the flank with 5:24 left, Youngman received the clearance 20 yards on the Pacers' defensive side of midfield.  Challenged all the way to goal, Youngman maintained possession for 80-plus yards while beating two defenders and ripped home the game-winner from just inside the 18-yard box, propelling the Pacers to the win.

Despite a 17-6 advantage in shots for the game, Marywood needed Youngman's heroics to escape the Griffins (8-5-1, 6-2-1 CSAC) on their senior night.

The hosts came out of the gates with extra enthusiasm, registering the game's first goal 4:58 into the contest.  Meghan Petroski edged a Marywood defender at the endline by the six-yard box and slotted a ball central that Tori Goebig one-timed home for her second goal of the year.

Fortunately for Marywood, Renae Moken answered with a tally just 4:28 later.  Aly Barlok found Megan Swiecicki inside the 18, who dropped the ball back to Moken who took one touch to her right before ripping a shot just inside the left post to knot the game at one.

With the score knotted 1-1 at the half, Marywood got the go-ahead goal they were looking for 13:28 into the second frame.  After a Pacers' corner kick, Jackie VonItter worked the ball away from the Griffins' keeper and after her shot deflected off of defenders, Desi Rill poked the ball home to give the visitors their first lead of the game.

With just over 15 minutes remaining, Gwynedd Mercy was able to find the equalizer on a beatiful one-time flick on a corner kick.  Grace Macnamara sent in a low driven ball to the near post that Erin Reitmeyer redirected with her foot, skimming the ball back across the goal line and into the far post netting to make it a 2-2 ballgame.

10 minutes later, Marywood would get the game-winner from Youngman, her team-leading 12th goal of the year.

Aly Moyer made three saves and Molly Sobolewski had the Pacers' "team save" late in the first half as she cleared a ball off the goal line that she inadvertently missed Moyer with on a drop-back pass and a Griffin attacker was able to get a one-time shot off towards goal.

Kailey Hopkins made a game-high 10 stops for the Griffins, including several nice breakaway chances that she took away from Swiecicki.

Marywood returns to action Saturday when they travel to Aston to take on Neumann University at 1:00 pm.
