Marywood Brushes Off Rutgers-Camden, Penn State Berks for Fifth Straight Win

Camden, N.J. – Marywood University extended its volleyball win streak to five matches by sweeping a Rutgers-Camden Tri-Match on Saturday. The Pacers beat Rutgers-Camden in five sets and downed Penn State Berks in four sets.
 
The Pacers beat the Lions by scores of 25-15, 28-30, 25-22, 25-15. Marywood rebounded from a one set deficit with a 25-23, 24-26, 12-25, 28-26, 15-12 win over the Scarlet Raptors.
 
The sweep puts Marywood's record at 10-15 on the year. Penn State Berks falls to 11-12, and Rutgers-Camden slips to 15-13.

Marywood ends a five-match losing streak to the Lions that dates back to the 2012 season.
 
Brenna Kelley recorded 31 digs for the second most in a four-set match in modern-day school history. Jordan Vossler contributed with 20 digs.
 
Gabriella Santos had eight of the team's 13 aces to put herself fourth in the school record books for a single match. She also had 12 digs.
 
Annie Heyen notched 45 assists and 17 digs.
 
Peri Sheerin led the Pacers with 16 kills and a .300 attack percentage. Mikayla Attwood made 13 kills and recorded six blocks. Sam Compton also supplied 13 kills.
 
As a team, Marywood finished with a .220 hitting percentage. Penn State Berks had a .090 attack percentage.
 
Penn State Berks' M. Wojciechowski amassed 39 digs. Alexis Horst was the only Lion in double figures offensively with 11 kills.
 
After taking care of the Lions handily in the first set, Marywood nearly came back from a large deficit in the second. Trailing by as many as six points, Katherine McGrath anchored a five-point effort facing set point to tie it after trailing 24-19. Megan Lackman and Amia Boone earned key kills to even the match.
 
Tied at 16 in the third, Kelley made the go-ahead kill, followed by a Santos ace to extend the lead to two. The Lions came within one point multiple times but were unable to capitalize.
 
Marywood took advantage of its momentum in the fourth to jump out to an early 10 point lead.

The Pacers used their blocking (7-2) and services (15-11) to their advantage in a tight win over the Scarlet Raptors.
 
Vossler led the team defensively with 24 digs. For the second time in three days, she recorded eight aces that rank fourth in modern-day program history.
 
Sheerin made 15 kills and committed just one error for a .333 attack percentage. Heyen finished with 36 assists.
 
Compton totaled 14 digs and four aces. Kelley had 11 digs. Attwood and Santos sparked the Pacers at the line with five and four blocks, respectively.
 
Rutgers-Camden loaded up the box score with Cortnee Wilkerson's 22 kills. Jordan Erskine had 14 kills. Natalie DiGiacomo secured 31 diggs.
 
In the first, Rutgers-Camden came back to even the score at 23-23. Attwood earned a kill from Heyen to set up set point and Marywood won on an attack error.
 
In the second, Marywood led by as many as 11 but Rutgers-Camden tied it at 20-20. A Sheerin kills and back-to-back Vossler aces gave Marywood a 23-20 lead. The Pacers had set point at 24-22, but the Scarlet Raptors won the final four points.
 
The third set did not go the Pacers' way. Rutgers-Camden scored eight straight points on Natalie DiGiacomo serves to lead by 13 at 18-5.
 
Rutgers-Camden had match point at 24-23 in the fourth. Compton had a kill to tie it. Tied at 26, Attwood and Santos teamed up for a block for the go-ahead point before Marywood won the set on an RC attack error.
 
In the fifth, Vossler sparked the Pacers to seven straight points after dropping the first two. As expected, Rutgers-Camden evened the score at 11-11. A kill and an ace by Compton set up match point at 14-11. After letting up a point, Sheerin closed out the win with a kill.
 
Marywood seeks to extend its streak to six Monday when it travels to Immaculata University in a pivotal CSAC matchup.
