Volleyball Upsets Keystone in CSAC Tri Sweep

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University survived a comeback effort to post an upset five-set win over Keystone College late Thursday night. The Pacers also swept the Colonial States Athletic Conference tri-match with a victory over Cairn University to remain undefeated in league play.

The Pacers beat the Giants by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 15-25, 27-29, 15-12. In a much shorter first match, Marywood downed the Highlanders by scores of 25-14, 25-7, 25-13.

With Immaculata University's win over Notre Dame University of Maryland, Marywood joins Cabrini University as the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the conference.

Marywood 3, Keystone 2

Jordan Vossler recorded the most digs in modern history for one match. Vossler had 43 digs to snap Rachel Tollett's mark of 41 that was set in 2010. She posted a kill to give the Pacers the lead for the first time in the deciding fifth set.

Peri Sheerin put down a match-high 17 kills for Marywood. Her 61 attacks matched the program high for a five-set match, last established by Emily Fillman in 2011. Sheerin also had a team-best four aces.

Sam Compton had a double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs. Mikayla Attwood added 11 kills with four total blocks.

Annie Heyen put up a match-leading 37 assists with 11 digs. Katie Bilello also notched a dozen digs. The Pacers posted a .114 hitting percentage in the victory.

The Pacers won the first set 25-18 before winning the second frame 25-20 to claim a 2-0 lead. Keystone battled back into the match with a 25-15 triumph in the third game and staved off three match points before forcing a decisive fifth set with a 29-27 decision in a back-and-forth game.

In the fifth set, the Giants raced out to a 7-3 lead, but Marywood rallied with nine of the next 10 points to claim a 12-8 advantage. The two teams traded points before Keystone scored three straight points to cut its deficit to 13-12, but the Pacers would prevail by getting the next two points on Compton kills to close out the match.

Amanda Hardy led Keystone's attack with 12 kills. Malley Bowen and Nicole Frascati chipped in with eight kills apiece for the Giants, who hit .090 in the setback. Bowen had a team-best 30 assists to go along with a trio of aces.

The match lasted two hours, 16 minutes.

Marywood 3, Cairn 0

Marywood quickly dispatched the Highlanders, thanks to Attwood's 11 kills and .350 attack percentage. Sheerin had 10 kills with just one error for an .600 attack percentage.

Heyen registered 26 assists with four aces in the first game of the tri-match. Compton had a team-high 11 digs.

Marywood shot .400 from the field for the match.

Lyntia Gwess provided nine of Cairn's 15 kills with a .250 attack percentage.

The Pacers will arise from their well-needed slumber to host another CSAC tri-match in two days when they welcome Notre Dame (Md.) and Centenary to the Insalaco Arena on Saturday. First serve is set for noon versus the Gators.
