Second Half Rally Lifts Men’s Soccer to CSAC Win

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood scored three second half goals to come back from a 2-0 deficit and defeat Cairn University 3-2 to win their second straight Colonial States Athletics Conference game. The Pacers (5-5, 2-2 CSAC) got the game-winner from Carlos Perez on a header in the 65th minute.

Cairn (7-6, 2-3 CSAC) got on the board in the ninth minute of action. Brandon Hasko scored directly off a corner kick. With the ball swinging in towards the goal, a Marywood defender tried unsuccessfully to clear the ball and it went into the net.  Since the ball would have gone in anyway, Hasko was credited with the goal.

Despite outshooting the Highlanders 13-7 in the opening frame, Marywood could not find the equalizer and went into the break still trailing 1-0.

Just 2:56 into the second, Cairn doubled their lead.  Hasko again played a role, as he sent in a cross from the left side that Joey Weaver would head in from 10 yards out, shocking the Pacers and the home crowd and putting the Highlanders up 2-0.

Marywood quickly countered back. Less than a minute after Weaver's goal put the visitors up two, the Pacers got a great opportunity in the box on a shot that was saved. An alert Jon Dinnell corralled the loose ball and dropped it back out of the 18 to a waiting Capers Borders, who stepped up and one-timed it from 30-yards out to the lower left corner and cut the Pacers' deficit in half.

Just over 10 minutes later, Giovanni Amato caught the Highlanders' keeper napping and sent in a 40-yard ball that went in just under the crossbar and knotted the game at 2-2.

Less than five minutes would go by before Amato sent in a long cross that Perez headed in at the far post for what turned out to be the game-winner, putting the Pacers up 3-2.

The goals from Capers, Amato and Perez were all their firsts of the year.

Colin Baker made nine saves for Cairn in the loss.  Michael Mejia made six stops to earn the win in goal for Marywood.  Marywood outshot the visitors 24-13 for the game (12-8 on goal) and had a 9-4 advantage in corners.

The Pacers return to the pitch Wednesday when they host Gwynedd Mercy University at 7:00 pm.
