Alvernia Nips Field Hockey on Penalty Stroke

Scranton, Pa. - Alvernia University edged Marywood University 1-0 in non-conference field hockey action as the Golden Wolves (7-6) were awarded a penalty stroke with no time remaining in the contest.  Andrea Wysocki put it home to give the visitors a thrilling win after a defensive battle throughout.  Marywood fell to 3-9 with the loss.

With the score knotted at 0-0 after a back-and-forth affair over 69 minutes, Alvernia was awarded a penalty corner with 15 ticks remaining, and, on the ensuing play, a foul called against Marywood awarded the visitors a penalty stroke. Wycocki beat Kerri Mountz on the left side of the cage for the game-winner.

An even first half saw the Golden Wolves and Marywood each take five shots with four of Alvernia's going on frame to two for Marywood. Mountz keeping the Pacers in the game with three first half saves.  Sara Sterchak also had a first-half defensive saves to keep the visitors off the board.

In the second, Alvernia's offense picked up action, but Mountz and the Pacers' defense kept them off the board until the final moments of the game.  

Mountz finished with six saves on the day.  Alvernia netminder Emma Bearmesderfer made two stops for the clean sheet.  Sara Marshall added a defensive saves for the Pacers. Kenzie Drew and Lindsey Quinn had Marywood's two shots on goal.  

For the game, Alvernia outshot Marywood 15-6 (9-2 on goal) and had 11 penalty corners to Marywood's three.

Marywood is back in action Wednesday at 4:00 pm at Cedar Crest in Allentown.
