Women's Soccer Advances, Hosts CSAC Title Match Saturday

Scranton, Pa. - Julie Youngman scored two goals and top-seed Marywood University advanced to the 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship game with a 4-2 win over #4 Gwynedd Mercy on a rainy night in Scranton.  The Pacers (12-5) will host #3 Cabrini University, a 2-1 winner over #2 Centenary, Saturday.

Youngman notched the first goal of the game 5:36 into the semifinal.  After the ball slipped out of Gwynedd Mercy's keeper's hands, Renae Moken attempted a close range shot that deflected off a defender's leg and redirected across the six-yard box to an on-coming Youngman, who took one touch and put it home into an empty net.

Marywood would give up a corner kick in the 13th minute, and despite making a spectacular stop on a close range shot, Aly Moyer gave up a rebound that Sarah Nedwick poked home as Moyer could not corral the second shot before it crossed the goal line.

The Pacers quickly regained the lead as Jackie VonItter found some dribbling room in the middle, carried the ball 15 yards and went to her right before ripping a shot back to the far post netting from 12 yards out.

An important goal, and what would become the game-winner, came in the 27th minute for Marywood.  Megan Swiecicki laid a brilliant through ball to Ashley Kruchinsky, who had entered the match moments before. Kruchinsky calmly collected her classmate's feed and slipped the GMU goalie to put Marywood up 3-1.

The score would remain 3-1 until 16 minutes into the second half, when Youngman provide the Pacers with some breathing room.  Taking a Moken feed down the left side, Youngman again took one touch before burying the ball home from close range, putting it in from seven out and giving Marywood a 4-1 lead.

The goals from Kruchinsky and Youngman proved beneficial as Gwynedd struck again six minute later.  In the 68th minute of action, Megan Putroski, who assisted on Nedwick's goal earlier, took a feed from Cassidy Rudd and scored from 15 out to make it 4-2.

Marywood's defense then clamped down and, despite allowing two dangerous direct kicks form the corner of the 18 yard box, did not allow another dangerous shot on goal.

Marywood dominated the Griffins offensively, outshooting the visitors 30-9 (15-7 on goal).  Kailey Hopkins made 11 saves for Gwynedd Mercy. Aly Moyer made four stops in the win, and Molly Sobolewski cleared one ball off the line for the Pacers.

Championship game time is set for 1:00 pm in Scranton. The CSAC's automatic bid will be on the line. Marywood is looking to repeat for the first time in program history while Cabrini has won five of the last seven CSAC titles.
