Women's Basketball Opens with Loss to Wilkes

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – Marywood University opened its 2017-18 women's basketball campaign with a 70-59 loss to Wilkes University on Friday night in the Cross County Challenge. The Pacers will take on King's College on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Erika Bistran led the Pacers in her first collegiate game with 14 points.

Natasha Hessling also reached double figures with 12 points. She made five of her six shots and had a team-high five rebounds.

Both Alyssa Olson and Gab Giordano tallied nine points apiece. Giordano tabbed five assists and five rebounds.

Marywood shot 34.3 percent from the field. Both teams combined for 43 turnovers. Marywood only scored nine points off the Colonels' 22 giveaways.

Free-throw shooting proved to be instrumental in the game. The Colonels (1-1) were sent to the line 38 times and made 26 attempts (68.4 percent). Conversely, the Pacers reached the charity stripe 14 times with a 57.1 percent success rate.

Catey McFadden finished with a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) for the Colonels. Alyssa Alfano brought in 14 points, and Emily Sofranko tallied 12 points. Combined, Wilkes' top three shooters went 21 for 24 (87.5 percent) from the free-throw line.

Marywood took its lone lead of the contest 1:15 into regulation when Giordano hit a jumper to go ahead 4-2. The game stayed even until McFadden stole the ball and advanced it ahead to Sofranko on a fast break. Hessling cut the lead to 10-8 with 3:24 left in the first quarter; however, the Colonels finished on a seven-point run.

Later in the fourth, Marywood seemed poised for a comeback effort. After Bistran connected on a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 62-53 with 4:33 left, Hessling drew an offensive foul and turnover to give the Pacers a chance to cut it to a two-possession game. Before the Pacers could bring it into the arc, Sofranko stole a pass and went coast to coast for a layup.
