Late Comeback Effort Not Enough to Unseat Monarchs

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – Marywood University freshman Erika Bistran was selected to the Cross County Challenger All-Tournament team for her performance following the women's basketball team's 74-71 loss to King's College on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers opened the season with losses to both Wilkes-Barre schools.

Bistran finished with 21 points. She went 7 for 14 from the field and hit a four 3-pointers. For the tournament, she averaged 17.5 points per game.

Natasha Hessling was just two rebounds short of a double-double. She tallied 2 points and eight boards.

Gab Giordano reached double figures with 10 points, in addition to six rebounds and six assists. Catie Nealon connected on three 3-pointers for nine points.

Trailing by seven with 1:37 remaining in the game, the Pacers made a valiant comeback in the final stages. After the Monarchs' Mackenzie Yori hit a long-ranged shot to extend the lead to 73-66, Hessling made a basket in the paint on an assist from Giordano to cut it to five points.

King's made just one of two free throws, and Giordano knocked down a 3-pointer from Alyssa Olson with 42 seconds to cut it to 74-71. King's Alex Steeber missed both attempts at the line, and Bistran put back a layup after collecting an offensive rebounds to bring it to a 74-73 deficit with 29 seconds left. Yori made one of her two free throws, and Marissa Fernandez Tierney was fouled with just a second remaining. She missed the first shot and made the second. The Monarchs' Rebecca Prociak made two free throws to seal the Monarchs' win.

King's led by as many as 12 in the third quarter.

Yori, a sophomore transfer from The University of Scranton, totaled a game-high 30 points with 10 field goals. Steeber had 13 points, and Olivia Hoffman had another stellar outing with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Both teams traded leads seven times during the first quarter. In the final 22 seconds, Bistran made a free throw, stole a ball, and hit a jumper to give the Pacers' a 24-21 lead at the break. Nealon hit a three with 5:33 to give the Pacers its largest lead of the contest (32-25). Yori capped off an eight-point run with a 3-pointer to take the lead 90 seconds later. The Monarchs closed out the half with another eight-point run, outscoring the Pacers 17-3 over the final five minutes of the second quarter.

Marywood's bench outscored the Monarchs by a 37-19 margin. The Pacers shot 40.3 percent from the field, compared to King's 42.6 percent.

The Pacers (0-2) head to crosstown Scranton, ranked No. 19 by d3hoops.com, on Tuesday.
