Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pacers Top Wilkes 74-64 Behind Three in Double Figures

Scranton, Pa. – The Marywood University men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak in the Cross County Challenge by defeating Wilkes University 74-64 behind three players in double figures.  The Pacers (2-1) picked up their first wins in the tournament since sweeping the Wilkes-Barre opponents in the 2014-15 tournament.

Thomas Swartz led Marywood with a 21-point effort, two shy of the game-high set by Wilkes' Marcus Robinson. Jeremy Ringland added 18 for Marywood, and Donovan Catchings had 15.

Both teams shot over 44 percent from the floor but Marywood hit 10 of 22 threes (45.5 percent) to that of 26.3 percent (5 of 19) for Wilkes. The Pacers out-rebounded the Colonels 31-29 in a fairly even game throughout both on the court and in the stat column.

Marywood built a 36-28 lead at halftime thanks to 53.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc and keeping Wilkes from hitting any from long range.

Marywood built an early 6-0 lead thanks to three points from Ringland and a trey from Catchings and went up 10-4 minutes later on another three from Catchings.

A third three pointer of the opening stanza from Catchings had Marywood up 22-10 and the Pacers expanded their lead to 28-12 on a long ball from Swartz with 7:32 to go in the first.  But Wilkes methodically chipped away at the Pacers' large lead, and climbed back into the contest by cutting their deficit to just eight points by the end of the first half.

Marywood maintained a seven point cushion throughout the opening four minutes of play in the second until Marcus Robinson connected on a three to cut the Colonels' deficit to just one, 40-39, with 16 minutes to go.

Wilkes hung around for the next six minutes but Marywood kept them from taking the lead despite several chances. Ringland nailed a three with 9:12 remaining to put Marywood up 53-48. Wilkes again got to within two with 4:24 left on another three from Robinson, but the Pacers again prevented them from taking a lead.

The Pacers then kept Wilkes at bay by knocking down numerous free throws over the final two minutes of action.

Marywood takes on King's College in day two of the Cross County Challenge Sunday. Tip-off at The University of Scranton's Long Center is set for 1:00 pm.
