Pacers Hold Off King's 87-80 for Cross County Title

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University cliched the 2017-18 Cross County Challenge Championship with a 87-80 win over King's College Sunday afternoon at the Long Center on the campus of The University of Scranton. Jeremy Ringland's game-high 22 points led Marywood to their second straight win, and first 2-0 record in the Challenge since 2014-15.  Coupled with Scranton's loss to Wilkes, the Pacers earned their first outright Challenge title since the inception of the tournament.

Ringland was named the Challenge's Most Outstanding Player.  Donovan Catchings joined his teammate on the All-Tournament team.

Four players reached double digits for Marywood as the Pacers improved to 3-1. Besides Ringland's game-high, Catchings and Jack DeGroot each had 15 for Marywood while Tone Cockrell added 10.

King's got 16 apiece from Chris Fazzini and Connor Callejas as the Monarchs fell to 2-3 on the year.

Marywood built a 46-38 halftime lead thanks to 63% shooting from the floor and 60% (6 of 10) from three point range.  The Pacers held King's to 42.9% shooting from the floor and just one of five from long distance.

The Pacers found themselves up 11, 72-61, after a three from Cockrell with 8:03 to go.  Back-to-back buckets from the Monarchs got them back to a single-digit deficit with less than seven to play, and the game would remain tight from there out.

Marywood went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe in the final 1:26 to hold off the Monarchs.  DeGroot, Catchings and Ringland went 6-for-6 on freebies in the final :18 of play to seal Marywood's second straight win.

Ringland, who was 9 of 16 from the floor on the day, also picked up a game-best seven rebounds.  DeGroot was on the mark all afternoon, going 4 of 5 from the field, 3 of 4 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Marywood, who held a 37-23 rebound advantage, shot 58.5% from the floor for the game.  King's managed a dismal 25% (4 of 16) shooting from three point range for the contest.

Marywood returns to league play midweek when they host Gwynedd Mercy University Wednesday at 8:00 pm in a CSAC tilt.
