Swartz Sets Career High, Free Throw Record in Loss to Gwynedd Mercy

Scranton, Pa. - Thomas Swartz scored a career high 32 points and set a new Marywood record by going 16-for-16 at the free throw line but it was not enough as the Pacers dropped to 0-2 in CSAC play with a 84-77 loss to Gwynedd Mercy Wednesday night.  The Pacers fall to 3-2 overall while the Griffins move to 3-1 (1-0 CSAC).

Swartz's career high came on 7 of 11 shooting, but the junior set a record for free throws made (16) in a single game and attempted the second most free throws in program history (16).  Swartz took the free throws made in a single game record from Prince Blacknall, who knocked down 14 against Penn State Schuylkill on January 13, 2009.

Two other Pacers, Jeremy Ringland and Donovan Catchings, added 10 points. But Gwynedd Mercy had two with 21 points (Will Davis and Rip Engel) and one with 19 (Courtney Cubbage) to secure the league win. Cubbage also had a game best 14 boards to complete the only double-double of the night.

Gwynedd held a eight point edge at halftime (35-27).  Both teams shot below 30% from three point range in the opening half, but Gwynedd Mercy outscored Marywood 20-8 in the paint, 10-2 off turnovers and 9-2 on second chance points in the opening stanza. Davis had 12 at the break on 6 of 9 shooting while Engel had 10.

In a game that saw six technical fouls and 46 total fouls called, Marywood got back into the game in the second half largely because of their 19 of 21 shooting from the charity stripe.  Gwynedd, meanwhile, hit just 16 of 27 (59%) of their freebies.  The Griffins did manage to hold off the Pacers down the stretch as Engel drove to the lane numerous times.

For the game, Gwynedd Mercy out-rebounded Marywood 46-36, outscored Marywood 42-26 in the paint and had 21 second chance points to Marywood's nine.

Marywood hosts Cairn Saturday at 3:00 pm.
