Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pacers End 20-Year Drought Against Susquehanna

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University earned its first women's basketball victory over Susquehanna University in two decades with a 79-66 win on Saturday. The Pacers needed five players to reach double figures to end a two-game losing streak.

It marks Marywood's first triumph over the River Hawks since an 86-85 overtime win during the 1987-88 season.

Natasha Hessling had her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. She made six of eight shots from the field.

Gab Giordano was a rebound and three assists shy of a triple-double. She finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Erika Bistran tallied a game-high 18 points to lead the Pacers. Fellow freshman Aryah Aungst came off the bench to score 13 points. Alyssa Olson reached double figures for the first time this season with 11 points.

Catie Nealon finished with seven assists and eight points.

The Pacers ousted the River Hawks in spite of the visitors yielding just four turnovers. Marywood committed 16 giveaways. The Pacers (2-6) outrebounded Susquehanna by a 60-42 margin.

Marywood shot a season-high 44.1 percent from the field. Susquehanna was limited to 32.5 percent shooting. The Pacers sank a season-high 12 shots from beyond the arc.

After letting up a Susquehanna (5-3) score on the first possession of the game, Marywood went on a 13-1 run to take a double-digit lead in the first five minutes of the contest. Bistran hit back-to-back 3-pointers on the Pacers' first two scoring possessions. Susquehanna did not let up, scoring the final six points over a 1:16 span to head into the break down by just four points. Marywood made 60 percent of its shots in the first stanza.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Olson and Nealon started a 10-point run in the second quarter. Marywood assumed its largest lead of the game when Aungst knocked down a 3-pointer off of a Giordano pass. The Pacers shot above 50 percent for the second straight quarter and headed into halftime with a 44-32 lead.

Susquehanna chiseled the Pacers' lead to four points when Bailey Trell made a basket in the third quarter to move to 53-49 with 3:46 left. Bistran snagged an offensive rebound and put it back in to start a 13-2 momentum.

The Rivers Hawks moved within single digits (73-66) just once in the fourth quarter when Rachel Sweger swished a 3-pointer with 1:50 remaining. Olson patented an inbounds pass to Hessling for a layup on the ensuing possession.

Susquehanna had 16 points from Erin McQuillen. Trell scored 13 points, and Megan McFadden contributed 10 rebounds.

Marywood will hope to get its first winning streak of the season when it hosts Widener University on Tuesday night. Fans are encouraged to bring their ugly Christmas sweaters in order to receive a price reduction at the gate. The Pacers will be collecting men's jeans to donate to the St. Francis of Assisi homeless shelter in Scranton.
