Women's Basketball Gets First Win of the Season in Rout of Cairn

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University earned its first victory of the season with a 75-49 win over Cairn University on Saturday in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action. Coach Tara Macciocco now stands eight shy of 200 career wins.

Catie Nealon led the team with 11 points. She made three 3-pointers and added four assists.

Natasha Hessling was a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. She made five of seven shots on the afternoon.

Both Erika Bistran and Aryah Aungst finished with nine points.

The Pacers shot a season-high 43.9 percent, while holding the Highlanders to 30.9 percent. Marywood (1-4, 1-1 CSAC) outrebounded Cairn by a 48-37 margin.

Cairn was carried by Victoria Stum with 16 points. Her sister Kendra Stum had five steals, five assists, seven rebounds and seven points.

Marywood was just three assists shy of a school record with 25. Four players – Nealon, Gab Giordano, Lisa Steakin, Alyssa Olson – finished with four assists.

The Pacers trailed only briefly when the Highlanders' Aigner Bookard stole the ball and went down court for a fast break layup to lead 4-3 at the 7:59 mark of the first quarter. Giordano stole a ball at mid-court, passed back to Marissa Fernandez Tierney for a give-and-go to take the lead. That started a 13-point run over 3:30 that culminated in an Aryah Aungst jumper to take a 16-4 advantage.

Cairn (0-4, 0-2 CSAC) trimmed the deficit to single digits with 69 seconds left in the first quarter. Marywood responded with a seven-point swing punctuated by a Nealon 3-pointer from the corner.

The Pacers outscored the Highlanders 32-8 in points off of turnovers.

Marywood looks to continue its success on Wednesday when it hosts Misericordia University.
