Pacers' Offense Erupts in 5-1 Win over Manhattanville

Tori Jo Kakusian ties CSAC all-time record for defensive saves

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Marywood University notched its first victory of the season with a 5-1 triumph over Manhattanville College Saturday in the consolation round of the Vassar College Tournament. Vassar downed SUNY Geneseo 3-1 in the championship game.

Tori Jo Kakusian and Kerri Mountz were both selected to the All-Tournament Team. Kakusian led the Pacers with two goals and a defensive save. Mountz kept away six shots in more than 53 minutes in the net without allowing a goal.

Kakusian's defensive save tied the Colonial States Athletic Conference career record. Her 33 defensive saves are even with Keystone's Adrienne Mellot for the all-time conference lead. She ranks in a seven-way tie for 13th in NCAA history and trails only Drew's Michele Prozic among active players.

Gwyneth Gleason matched Kakusian with a pair of goals – the first two of her career. Sara Sterchak evened her career high with two assists. Kenzie Drew tallied a goal.

Kakusian kicked off the scoring with the Pacers' first goal of the year, beating the goalkeeper to the left side off of a penalty corner in the 10th minute. Gleason corralled a loose ball behind the keeper and delivered it to the back of the cage in the 29th minute to extend the lead.

A mere six seconds before the first half's concluding whistle, Kakusian made the best of a penalty stroke for her career 39th goal.

The Pacers' offense continued to roll in the second half. Drew fired a shot, off of a Sterchak penalty corner pass, that deflected off of a Valiant defender and into the cage for a 4-0 lead. In the 62nd minute, Gleason again snagged a loose ball, knocking in a penalty corner shot blocked by a Manhattanville back.

With the pair of goals, Gleason quadrupled her career points heading into Saturday's consolation game.

Manhattanville ended the defense's hopes for a clean sheet when Lisa Maxwell received a pass from Ameerah Thomas and found the far right side of the goal.

Marywood (1-1) outshot the Valiants 23-11. The Pacers had a 16-2 advantage in penalty corners.

The Pacers travel to Edwardsville, Pa. Wednesday to face Wilkes University at 7:00 pm.
