Marywood Drops OT Thriller to Wilkes

Pacers drop to 1-2 on year, host DeSales Sunday

Edwardsville, Pa. – Battling steady rain all evening over Schmidt Stadium in Edwardsville, Marywood field hockey fell in overtime to host Wilkes University 4-3 on Wednesday. Megan Kane notched the game winner off an assist from Aly Dunn with 5:42 remaining in OT.

Wilkes (1-2) nearly ended it just 1:30 into the 7v7 overtime period but a defensive save from Sara Marshall kept the Pacers in the game. A Marywood penalty corner with seven minutes left in the extra frame was easily cleared away by the Colonels, and a breakaway attempt for the Pacers was also knocked away.

That breakaway attempt was countered with the winning goal for Wilkes as the Colonels went the distance of the field for the game-winner from Kane.

Wilkes' Ali Dunn put the hosts up 1-0 early with her goal in the fifth minute of action off an assist from Zoe Stepanski.  The Colonels doubled their lead just before halftime as Marissa Surdy took a feed from Megan Kane and finished with just 1:32 left in the half.

Marywood quickly cut into that deficit in the second half as Jenna Dickey scored just 49 seconds in. Dickey's goal came on an assist from Gwyneth Gleason.

The Pacers knotted the game at 2-2 just over 14 minutes later (49:53) as Karly Kaminsky scored unassisted.

The hosts reclaimed a one goal lead in the 56th minute of action when Surdy notched her second tally of the game, this time off a feed from Haley Gayoski.

But Marywood responded to adversity yet again with Lindsey Gladden's first goal of the year.  Meredith Yozwiak was credited with the assist on Gladden's goal with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation (61:20).

Marywood had one more dangerous opportunity late as the Pacers picked up a penalty corner with just over a minute remaining, but the Colonels safely batted it away.

The two teams were evenly matched throughout in the book with the exception of Marywood's nine penalty corners to four for the hosts.

Wilkes took 16 shots to Marywood's 14 and had a 13-10 advantage in shots on goal.  Kerri Moutz made nine stops in goal for Marywood.

The Pacers (1-2) return to action Sunday with their 2017 home opener as they host DeSales University at 2:00 pm.
