Volleyball Slips to Penn State Harrisburg in Four Sets

Marywood lets leads slip in first set, recovers for third set

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University dropped its fifth match of the season, falling to Penn State Harrisburg in four sets Thursday in non-conference women's volleyball. The Pacers fell by scores of 26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15.

Peri Sheerin finished with 13 kills and just two errors for a .458 attack percentage. Sheerin also led the team with four aces.

Annie Heyen contributed 28 assists and a team-high 10 digs. Mikayla Attwood had six kills and six block assists. Sam Compton tacked on nine digs.

Serving and receiving dampened the Pacers' chances. Marywood (0-5) committed 20 service errors and 15 receiving errors. Nearly a third of the Lions' points came via attacks.

For the Lions (4-1), Alexandra Kon led the way with 10 kills and a .467 attack percentage. Casey Stump registered five aces, nine digs and 27 assists. Melanie Shaeffer finished with four aces and nine digs.

Marywood shot an outstanding .346 percentage in the first set but let a late lead slip through the cracks on the service game. The Pacers owned a 21-17 lead when Gabriella Santos earned a kill. Kari Ammerman brought back the Lions with three service aces on four serves, tying the set at 22 apiece. Two faulty sets and an Attwood kills gave the Pacers' set point with a 24-23 lead. Penn State Harrisburg closed out with three straight points. Ester Talamo recorded an ace to put the visitors ahead 1-0.

Momentum stood in the Lions' favor as they scored the first six points of the second frame.

Marywood trailed in the third by a 16-12 clip before evening the score off Brenna Kelley serves, capped by a Sheerin kill from Compton. Penn State's lead extended back to 20-16 before Marywood won nine of the last 12 points. Sheerin had four points off services, including back-to-back aces to tie it at 20-20. After Penn State Harrisburg posted a point, Marywood took advantage of attack errors to ride out four straight points on Katherine McGrath serves. The Lions drew it back to a one-point match before Compton secured the kill to seal the set.

The fourth set went much of the same route of the second with Penn State Harrisburg buckling down to jump to an early 5-1 advantage.

Marywood will take the weekend off to resettle before hitting the road on Tuesday to take on Ursinus College.
