Pacers Triumph over Griffins in Five Sets

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Marywood University volleyball team needed five sets and extra points to dispatch Gwynedd Mercy University Thursday in Atlantic East action. With the 3-2 victory, the Pacers moved to fourth place with a 13-8 overall, 2-3 conference record.
 
Marywood came back from a set down to win the past two games. The Pacers won by scores of 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 25-18, 19-17.
 
Sam Compton posted season-highs of 20 kills, 18 digs and a .261 attack percentage. She bested her career-high offensive outing by seven kills.
 
Mikayla Attwood set career bests with 19 kills and 22 points. She committed just five errors on 45 attempts for a .311 hitting percentage. Attwood blocked four shots – two solo, two assists.
 
Nicole Cashman also provided career highs with 14 kills, seven aces, and 14 digs.
 
Defensively, six Pacers reached double figures. Jordan Vossler had 25 digs. Annie Heyen tallied 20 digs. Sara Burgos and Brenna Kelley finished with 14 and 10 digs, respectively.
 
Sara Burgos garnered 52 assists for the most ever in a five-set match in Marywood history. It is one shy of Kelly Chadwick's school record.
 
In the first set, Marywood jumped to a nine-point lead, thanks to a six-point run on Burgos' serves.
 
Gwynedd Mercy won the first seven points of the second set. Marywood quickly erased the margin with four straight Cashman service aces and took a lead on an Attwood kill (10-9). Tied at 20-20, the Griffins went ahead on a Pacers' service error. A pair of Liz Schule kills extended the lead, and Cassie McCarney had an ace to take a 25-21 advantage. Gwynedd Mercy won six of the last seven points of the third set to take the one game lead.
 
Marywood jumped to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set on Ashley King serves. After the Griffins tied the match at 8-8, Attwood had a go-ahead block that started a seven-point run on Cashman serves.
 
In the deciding set, the Griffins took a 13-12 lead on an attack error. Following a timeout, Cashman even the score with a kill. The teams traded points five times with the Griffins receiving four match point opportunities. Attwood saved match points twice, and Compton had a kill to even the score at 16-16. Marywood closed the match with three Griffins' errors.
 
Marywood hosts King's College and Pratt Institute in a tri-match on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
