Late Goal Sinks Pacers in Atlantic East Showdown

Arlington, Va. - An 88th minute goal was the difference in Marywood University's 2-1 loss to Marymount University Saturday in Atlantic East men's soccer action.

Fifth-year player Ian Byrnes scored his first career goal for an equalizer in the 79th minute. Byrnes lasered a shot from 22 yards out to the top right off of an assist from Zac Lloyd. He made his first points in his penultimate regular season game.

Headed into the last 10 minutes of play, the Saints were looking for that last opportunity to take the advantage. Amza Saifi broke away from his defender on a run with the ball. Saifi found time and room to launch the shot, that was just denied by the goal post.

Just one minute after Saifi's near miss, Mynor Danilo Lopez put a move on his defender on the right side of the box. Lopez dribbled into the box beating yet another defender, and with time and room, Lopez buried the game-winning goal.

Marymount edged Marywood 17-16 in shots, and both teams finished with six shots on target. The Saints had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Mike Gallagher finished with three saves. Michael Donato finished with one save in 45 minutes.

Marywood closes its regular season Wednesday at home against Neumann University at 4 p.m.
