Men's Soccer Lets Lead Slip to First-Place Knights

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University led first-place Neumann University at halftime Wednesday before falling 2-1 in the Atlantic East Conference men's soccer regular season finale. The Knights scored a pair of second half goals on set pieces to secure the top spot in the conference playoffs.

By means of a goals-differential tiebreaker over Gwynedd Mercy, the Pacers (1-12-1, 0-5-1) earn the No. 6 seed in the inaugural Atlantic Conference. Marywood will face either Cabrini University, Immaculata University or Wesley College in the first round, depending on those respective teams' results tonight.

Minutes after reentering due to an injury, Zac Lloyd put the Pacers ahead in the 29th minute. The Knights' goalkeeper and left back were trading passes in the backfield when Aram Agababhian forced pressure to corner the ball. A pass was intercepted by Cody Gangaware at the 18. Gangaware dribbled through two defenders and dished a center pass to Lloyd. Lloyd's initial shot was thwarted by the Neumann keep, but Lloyd stopped momentum to nudge a shot with his right foot into the goal for the 1-0 lead.

Marywood's lead held until the 47th minute. Andrew Kelly headed a Marlon Trejo set piece at the 18 into the upper corner of goal for the equalizer.

Seven minutes later, Neumann scored the game-winning goal on a throw-in opportunity. Kelly's toss was flicked by Daniel Rival into the box. Ainsley Reid finished with a one-timer from the 15 to complete the double-assisted scoring play.

Neumann prevailed despite a near-identical box score for both teams. Marywood outshot the Knights 15-14, and both teams totaled six shots on frame. Neumann had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Mike Gallagher finished with four saves. His counterpart Shane Smith had five stops.

Ian Byrnes and Cody Gangaware were honored prior to the game. Gangaware earned an assist in his final regular season game.

The Pacers' playoff game will be on the road on Tuesday at a time to be determined.
