Men's Soccer Ties 1-1 in Atlantic East Opener

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University opened the inaugural Atlantic East Conference men's soccer game with a 1-1 draw against Gwynedd Mercy University Wednesday on its home turf. It marked the first Pacers' tie since a 1-1 draw to Centenary University on Oct. 11, 2016.

Dominic DeGeorge scored his first career goal for the Pacers' lone goal. DeGeorge took advantage of a cross into the box that was misplayed by the Gwynedd Mercy sweeper. It set up an open shot from 10 yards away in the 50th minute.

Gwynedd Mercy used a counterattack to even the score in the 85th minute. Hugh Lynch sprinted down the right sideline, sending a cross over the middle. Kevin Bowers came in from the back to put in the shot from 5 yards away.

Brian Deane kept a ball from heading into the goal with a game-saving team save in the 100th minute. With eight seconds left in the first overtime period, Deane was the last line of defense to thwart a Chayzen Murray shot, preserving the 1-1 stalemate.

Marywood put three shots on net to no avail in the final overtime period. P.J. Fiore sent a last-chance shot on goal with five seconds left but Gwynedd Mercy keeper Kace Peters corralled it to ensure the tie.

Mike Gallagher made three saves for Marywood.

The Pacers (1-7-1, 0-0-1 AEC) doubled the Griffins in shots by a 22-11 margin. Marywood had 12 shots on goal to Gwynedd Mercy's five. The Pacers held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks with three in overtime play.

Marywood heads to Immaculata University on Saturday.
