Marywood Edges Gwynedd Mercy in Atlantic East Opener

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Julie Youngman scored with just 26 seconds left in the first half and Marywood University held off host Gwynedd Mercy University for a 1-0 win in the Atlantic East Conference women's soccer opener for both schools.

Marywood (4-6) won its  third straight game in improving to 1-0 in league play, while the Griffins slip to 3-5-3 (0-1).

Kassandra Riemer assisted on Youngman's game-winner after she fired a shot off a cross from Jackie VonItter that was blocked by Griffin defenders. The loose ball on the rebound went to the far corner of the 18, where Youngman blasted one back over keeper Kailey Hopkins to the far-post netting.

With the goal, Youngman is now tied with Siobhan Blancafor ('13) for second in program history for goals (41) and points (113). Youngman also moves into second with her 15th career game-winning goal, one shy of a Lindsay Pappas' ('03) school record.

Gwynedd Mercy had several chances to tie early in the first half, including a breakaway attempt from Victoria Braeunle, where the shot sailed just inches over the crossbar in the 59th minute.

The Pacers out-shot the hosts 11-6 (6-3 on goal) and had seven corners to two for the Griffins.

Aly Moyer made three stops in goal to record her second consecutive clean slate, including a goal-line stop late in the first half when the contest was still scoreless.

Marywood hosts Immaculata Saturday at 1:00 pm.
