Volleyball Sweeps Lions, Cannoneers

Media, Pa. – Marywood University swept both matches of a tri-meet with three-set wins over Penn State Brandywine and Pratt Institute Sunday in non-conference volleyball action. Winners of eight of their last 10, Pacers improve their record to 11-6.

Marywood 3, Penn State Brandywine 0

After battling through a difficult opening set, the Pacers won by scores of 28-26, 25-19, 25-21. The Pacers had 40 kills to the Lions' 18 and held their opponents to a zero attack percentage.

Both Peri Sheerin and Gabriella Santos finished with 10 kills. Sheerin figured in with three aces and seven digs.

Sara Burgos provided 36 assists, tying for the fourth-most in a three-set match in modern school history. Jordan Vossler had 12 digs and three aces.

Marywood came back from a 20-10 deficit in the first set. Sam Compton turned things around with a kill from Burgos. On Vossler's serves, Marywood scored seven straight to close the game to 20-17. Following a 23-20 Lions' lead, Ashley King evened the score at 23 apiece with a pair of back-to-back aces.

Mikayla Attwood had a block and a kill to save and force game point, respectively. Brandywine evened the score at 26-all. Sheerin regained the advantage with a kill. Compton finished with the game point on a kill that was aided by a block error.

In the second set, Marywood extended a four-point lead to 22-12 on a six-point run on King serves. Facing an 8-8 score, the Pacers broke ahead with nine of 10 points.

Marywood 3, Pratt 0

Marywood won by scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-18. The Pacers had 15 aces and a .235 shooting percentage.

Santos again led the Pacers offensively with nine kills, five blocks, and a .563 attack percentage. Mikayla Attwood blocked eight (two solo-six assists) Cannoneer shots. Sara Burgos tallied 22 assists and four aces. Jordan Vossler garnered 16 digs.

Pratt stats were unavailable at press time.

Marywood has its first Atlantic East Conference home match on Wednesday when it hosts Immaculata University at 7:00 pm.
