Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Diplomat Spoil Women's Basketball Season Opener

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University was unable to post a victory for Gabby Holko's coaching debut in a 54-51 loss to Franklin and Marshall College Tuesday in women's basketball action. The Pacers came back from nine down in the second half to have a chance to tie the game on their last possession.

Sophomore Emily Theobald scored 12 points and eight rebounds in her Marywood debut. Fellow Honesdale alum Natasha Hessling finished with 13 rebounds and seven points.

Aryah Aungst reached double figures with 11 points and four assists.

After an abysmal first quarter from the field for both teams, both teams stepped it up the rest of the way. The Pacers outshot the Diplomats 40.4-to-35.1 percent. Marywood outrebounded Franklin and Marshall 39-30, but the Pacers committed 17 turnovers. Marywood took advantage of poor Dips' free throw shooting. F&M made just 4 of 13 shots (35.1 percent) from the charity stripe.

Marywood ended the third quarter tied with the Dips after Aungst made a layup in the paint on an assist from Kilie Wyers. Franklin and Marshall opened the fourth with a pair of 3-pointers from Sarah Pisani to take a six-point lead. A jumper from Asilyn Narracci gave F&M its largest lead of the game (48-40) with 4:37 left.

Marissa Fernandez Tierney dutifully responded with a jump shot from Natasha Hessling. After the Dips grew their lead back to eight, Wyers sunk a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Theobald scored the next six Pacers' points, and a layup on a Wyers feed with 20 seconds remaining put the Pacers within one (52-51) with 20 seconds remaining.

Franklin and Marshall was fouled with 12 seconds left, and Haley Pinone drained each of her foul shots to extend the lead to three points. The Dips' defense stifled the Pacers' attempts to get off a potential chance to force overtime, and Marywood was unable to get a shot off out of the corner.

Marywood will return home Friday to host the Cross County Challenge. The Pacers will face Wilkes University and King's College.
