Pacers Take Share of Cross County Challenge Behind Fourth Quarter Comeback

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University earned a share of the Cross County Challenge women's basketball title with a come-from-behind victory over King's College. The Pacers erased a nine-point deficit with as many minutes remaining to defeat the Monarchs 69-66 on Saturday.

Both Lackawanna County teams – Scranton and Marywood – finished 2-0 in the tournament. The Pacers welcome the No. 8 Royals on Tuesday evening for a de facto championship game.

Emily Theobald was selected to the All-Cross County Challenge Team. She was joined by Scranton's Makenzie Mason, King's Mackenzie Yori, and Wilkes' Maddie Kelley on the all-tournament.

It is the second time in the Cross County Challenge's three installments that the Pacers won a share of the championship. Marywood defeated both Luzerne County programs in 2016-17.

Natasha Hessling was a rebound shy of a school record with 19 rebounds. Hessling added 14 points to collect her first double-double of the season. She grabbed seven offensive rebounds and 12 defensive boards. Hessling also contributed with five assists.

Theobald set a career-high for the second straight game with 18 points. She made eight of 17 attempts from the field.

Aryah Aungst and Alyssa Olson both reached double figures in scoring for the second straight day. Aungst finished with 15 points, and Olson added 10 points with five assists.

Marywood (2-1) shot 45.2 percent from the field and held the Monarchs to a 31.6 percent shooting outing. The Pacers outrebounded the Monarchs 46-43. The Pacers outscored the Monarchs 32-24 in the paint.

King's jumped to a 53-44 lead in the fourth quarter on a Yori 3-pointer that arced in the net. Olson followed with a 3-pointer of her own to trim the Pacers' deficit to two possessions with 7:24 remaining.

The Monarchs (1-2) extended its lead to eight (57-49) on a pair of free throws by Kayla Dillinger. A pair of Aungst jumpers put the Pacers within four points.

With 3:12 left, Theobald made a jumper at the top of the key from Kilie Wyers to cut the deficit to 61-57. On the next Pacers' possession, Aungst made a layup off of a Wyers pass to make it a one possession game. Wyers assisted her third straight backer on a Theobald layup to even the score at 61-61 with 1:59 remaining. Theobald took the lead with less than 90 seconds remaining on an Olson pass and then made both ends at the charity stripe to take a 65-61 lead with 38 seconds to go.

King's Lindsey Dippre made two free throws with 31 seconds left to cut the Pacers' lead to two. Wyers redeemed an earlier free throw trip by making both shots to stretch the lead back to four. Yori breathed life into the Monarchs' chances with a step-back 3-pointers with 18 seconds left. With a one-point advantage, Aungst made two free throws to solidify the victory.

Rebecca Prociak had a double-double with 17 rebounds and 11 points. Yori finished with 19 points, and Dippre had 12 points.
