Rutgers-Newark Tops Marywood for John K. Adams Title

Newark, N.J. – Host Rutgers-Newark claimed the 2018 John K. Adams Tip-Off Tournament title as they defeated Marywood (3-2) 63-52 Sunday afternoon.  The Scarlet Knights improved to are 2-0 to start the season.

Thomas Swartz had a team-high 19 and Jeremy Ringland added 13, but both came up just short of 1,000 career points in today's game as Swartz is now just three points (997) and Ringland four points (996) away.  Both hope to reach the milestone Tuesday night at home.

The Scarlet Knights, who held Marywood to a rough first half start, got a game-high 22 points from Chase Barneys  and had three other players in double figures.

Swartz hit 11 of 12 free throws in the opening half, but Marywood managed only two field goals in the opening stanza as they trailed by six, 25-19, at the break. Only Adam Boussatta and Jeremy Ringland managed field goals in the opening half, as Marywood shot a season low 11.8% (2 of 17) from the floor in the half.

Neither team shot well from beyond the arc, as Marywood was 0-for-7 in their efforts from long range and the Scarlet Knights hit just 1 of 10 attempts. Marywood stayed in the game by allowing Rutgers-Newark just seven first half field goals on 28 attempts (25%). 

Rutgers-Newark had a 28-13 advantage on the glass in the first half alone, including a 12-1 advantage on the offensive boards.

Marywood shot just 29.8% (14 of 47) for the game, but did manage to have a strong defensive effort despite the lack of offensive performance as they held Rutgers-Newark to 32.7% (18 of 55) shooting.

Both teams were 22 of 31 (71%) from the line. For the game, the Scarlet Knights had a 48-32 rebound advantage (17-6 on offensive boards).

Marywood was just 2 of 15 from behind the arc (13.3%) while R-N made five of their 20 (25%) attempts.

The Pacers host Penn State Harrisburg (3-1) Tuesday night at 8:00 pm in the Insalaco Arena.
