DeGroot Sparks Men's Basketball to 74-69 Win over Potsdam

Scranton, Pa. - Sophomore Jack DeGroot came off the bench to lead Marywood University to a 74-69 victory over SUNY Potsdam Saturday in men's basketball action. The Pacers outscored the Bears 10-5 over the last four minutes to take the victory. 

DeGroot finished with a season-high 19 points. He made 7 of 11 shots from the field with five rebounds. 

Four Pacers finished with double figures on the afternoon. Fresh off reading the 1,000 Point Club, Jeremy Ringland and Thomas Swartz finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Adam Boussatta was a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. 

Tone Cockrell produced five assists. 

Marywood (4-3) finished with a 45.8 field goal percentage. Potsdam finished 39.1 percent from the field. The Pacers outrebounded the Bears by a 42-40 advantage. 

Potsdam led by as many as 11 points in the first half. Jayquan Thomas scored on a fast break in the pain on a Colby Simpson feed to take an 18-7 advantage with 13:04 left. After trailing by nine later, Marywood went on a 13-2 run. Ringland hit a 3-pointer with 4:57 left to even the score at 26-26. DeGroot hit a jump shot in the corner to take the Pacers' first lead. DeGroot made a trey in the corner to help the Pacers extend their lead to 35-30 at half. 

The Bears (1-3) evened the score in the second half with a seven-point run to tie the game at 44-44 with 14:37 left. 

Marywood trailed 64-62 and tied the game with a Cockrell layup from Ringland. Ringland set up a big play by feeding DeGroot on the baseline for a layup. Potsdam cut the deficit to two (71-69) on a Nosa Onabor 3-pointer with 1:39 left. Potsdam had a chance to take the lead but Ringland blocked a Serigne Kane shot with 44 seconds remaining. Swartz made one of two free throws to take a three-point advantage with 39 seconds left. 

DeGroot capped the win with a defensive rebound and making a free throw to make it a two possession game with 25 seconds on the scoreboard. 

Marywood returns to action Wednesday to take on Clarks Summit University at 8:00 pm
