First Quarter Hinders Women's Basketball in Widener Loss

Chester, Pa. - Marywood University was unable to come back from a seven-point deficit in the first quarter en route to an 84-76 loss to Widener University Sunday in women's basketball action. The Pacers dropped its first loss of the season and slip to 2-3 on the season. 

In just her second collegiate game, Morgan Shamro came off the bench to score 19 points. Shamro went 7 of 9 from the field and made five 3-pointers in just 16 minutes on the court. 

Natasha Hessling finished with her second double-double of the year with 15 rebounds and 12 points. He finished with four steals and four assists. 

Aryah Aungst and Alyssa Olson joined Shamro and Hessling in double figures. Aungst tallied 16 points, coupled with five assists. Olson factored in with 10 points. Aungst has reached double figures in all five games this season. 

Olson and Aungst made a pair of 3-pointers to cut the Pride's lead to one possession (63-60) with 7:36 remaining. After Payton Kovac made a layup to bring the deficit back to three a minute later, Widener went on a seven-point run in three straight possessions to take a 72-62 lead with 5:08 left. 

Shamro made a basket with 2:25 remaining to come within five (79-74) with 2:25 left. Nicole Barnes made a jumper on the next Widener possession, and the Pride made three free throws down the stretch to secure the win. 

Marywood tied for the third-most 3-pointers made in school history. The Pacers made 12 of 25 shots from beyond the arc. Shamro alone made 5 of 6 from long distance. 

The Pacers went 41.7 percent from the field and 73.7 percent from the charity stripe. Widener shot 48.5 percent from the court and made three-fourths of its free throw shots. The Pride outrebounded a Pacers' team that was without two of its starters by a 43-31 margin. 

Widener's Devan Rimmer had 221 points. Erin Phelan and Mackenzie McCracken scored 17 and 10 points, respectively. 

Marywood travels to Misericordia on Wednesday.
