Men's Basketball Holds Off New Rochelle to Win Opener

Williamsport, Pa. - Thomas Swartz had a game-high 23 points, including several crucial free throws down the stretch, to lift Marywood University to a 89-84 win over the College of New Rochelle in the season opener for both squads.  The Pacers will take on host Lycoming tomorrow for the Dutch Burch Tournament Championship.

Swartz, the 2017-18 NCAA Division III statistical champion for free throw percentage, had 23 on 6-of-15 shooting from the floor, including three three pointers, and was 8-for-10 from the line to help secure the Pacers (1-0) their first win of the season. The Blue Angels (0-1) were led by a 20 point effort from Hunter Schenkel.  Marywood's Tone Cockrell and CNR's Justin Rivera each had 12.

Marywood held a 13-point 46-33 lead at the break, but the Blue Angels made a game of it in the second half as they shot 50% from the floor in the second stanza compared to a 33.3% effort in the first.  Marywood managed a 46.4 effort from the floor for the game, including 52% in the second half as they went more inside.

Neither team shot well from beyond the arc, as Marywood dropped six of 21 long range efforts for the game and the Blue Knights were 5-of-13. Marywood hit nearly 80% of their freebies on the charity stripe, knocking down 31 of 39 free throw attempts.  CNR hit just 19 of their 29 from the line.

The Pacers edged the Blue Angels in rebounds, 41-40.  Marywood's bench outscored their opponents 40-29.  Both teams had 38 points in the paint.

Cockrell was stellar defensively for the Pacers, drawing 10 fouls and forcing three turnovers.

Marywood will take on host Lycoming College, a 99-86 winner over PSU-Schuylkill, at 3:00 pm tomorrow in the Championship game.
