Men's Basketball Defeats King's, 72-63

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - Marywood University had four players in double figures, led by 18 from Thomas Swartz, as the Pacers defeated King's College 72-63 in the Cross County Challenge Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers, the defending Cross County Champions, have now won five of their last six and improve to 8-4 on the year. The Monarchs fell to 2-9 with the loss.

Aside from Swartz, Zach Tinkham had 16, Jeremy Ringland added 14 and Adam Boussatta had 12 for the Pacers.  Ringland also added eight boards and a game-high five blocks in the win. All of Marywood's points came from seven players.

Jake Pawliczak from King's had game-highs in points (19) and rebounds (12) to complete the double-double. Andrew Hudak added 15 for the Monarchs.

Both teams shot over 40% from the floor, but Marywood limited the hosts to 3 of 14 (21.4%) shooting from beyond the arc while draining seven of their 16 attempts (43.8%).  Marywood also sank 23 free throws in the game while King's made eight of just 13 attempts.

Marywood had an early 15-6 lead just over eight minutes in but King's slowly chipped away at that lead, finding themselves down three several times the rest of the first half.  The Pacers were up 11 (35-24) after a three from Boussatta with 2:54 to go in the opening half, but King's closed on a 6-0 run to get back to within five, heading into the locker room down 35-30 at the break.

Early in the second half the Monarchs would tie the game at 38-38, but could never take the lead, as the Pacers used a quick 5-0 spurt to reclaim a lead.

King's had two leads in the game, and those came when Pawliczak and Kevin Hunter drained back-to-back jumpers in the lane with around six minutes to play, giving the hosts 54-53 and 56-55 leads, respectively. But Tinkham then drained a trey to put Marywood up 58-56, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

By the time the three minute mark rolled around, Marywood had a comfortable nine point lead thanks to a jumper from Donovan Catchings.

Marywood will take on Wilkes University tomorrow at 1:00 pm. That game will also be played at King's College.
