Wilkes Tops Marywood in Cross County, 74-70

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – Wilkes University used a big second half run and held off Marywood for a 74-70 non-conference win Sunday afternoon at King's College in the second day of the Cross County Challenge.

Both teams finished the tournament 1-1 with Wilkes improving to 9-2 and Marywood dropping to 8-5 on the year.

Jeremy Ringland and Thomas Swartz were both named to the All-Tournament team.

Swartz finished Sunday's contest with a game-high 22 points, giving him 40 points over the weekend.  Ringland added 17 in today's loss, adding two blocks and six boards.  Jack DeGroot had 14 for the Pacers.

Mark Mullins led the Colonels with 18 while three others reached double figures.

Marywood and Wilkes battled throughout the first half and went into the break tied at 29.

Down 43-42 in the second half after a pair of Wilkes free throws with 12:29 to go, Marywood used a 12-3 run over a nearly three minute span to take a 54-46 lead.  But Wilkes answered with a 16-0 run over the next four minutes to go back up, 62-54, with 5:32 remaining.

From there, the teams traded baskets down the stretch.  Down 72-69, Swartz was fouled before trying a game-tying three pointer. After sinking his first free throw to get the Pacers to with two with 2.2 seconds remaining, Swartz intentionally missed his second, and attempted to tip in his own miss, but was called for leaving the free throw line early, giving Wilkes possession of the ball.

The Colonels would make their final two freebies to seal the 74-70 win.

Marywood opens a new era Saturday, January 5 when they host Wesley College at 3:00 pm for the Pacers' first Atlantic East Conference game.
