Men's Basketball Ends 18-Year Drought at Gwynedd Mercy

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - The Marywood University's men's basketball team ended a 18-year drought on the road at Gwynedd Mercy University with a stunning 65-57 win on Saturday in Colonial States Athletic Conference competition. The Pacers' first win on the road over the Griffins since Feb. 2, 2000 propels Marywood to a 13-10 overall record, and, more importantly, an 8-8 league record as they inch closer to securing a playoff berth.

Thomas Swartz had 16 points to lead Marywood, while Jeremy Ringland added 15. The Pacers held the hosts to 0-of-13 shooting from 3-point range in the second half when they outscored them 40-27. For the game, the Griffins hit just 2 of 22 (9.1%) from long range.

The loss drops Gwynedd Mercy out of a first-place tie with Cabrini at 17-5 (12-3 CSAC). Will Davis had a game high 25 points in the loss.

Marywood's bench outscored the hosts by a 16-8 margin. The Pacers were 12-of-14 (85.7%) from the charity stripe, while the Griffins struggled at the foul line, hitting just 11 of 22 freebies. Swartz, currently ranked third in the nation for free throw percentage, went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line in the win.

Marywood trailed by five (30-25) at the break and soon found themselves down 10 as the Griffins scored the first five points of the second half.  Down 10 again (37-27) with 17:22 to play, the Pacers slowly chipped away at the host's lead, going on a 11-3 run to get to within two (40-38) with 14:21 left after a layup from Joey Monaghan.

Marywood hung close over the next couple of minutes, and finally took a lead on an Adam Boussatta tip-in. Boussatta nailed two free throws moments later to give the visitors a 47-44 lead.

Later, up 55-54, Jack DeGroot gave the Pacers a bit of breathing room when he knocked down a trey to put Marywood up 58-54 with 4:17 to play.  The Griffins would score just three points the rest of the way as Marywood sealed the game by holding the hosts scoreless over the final 3:03 of the game.

Leading 60-57, Monaghan gathered an offensive rebound to save the Pacers' possession. It led to Swartz hitting a floater on the base line to provide the Pacers with a 62-57 lead with 1:40 remaining. Donovan Catchings sealed the victory when he dove for a loose ball rebound off of the floor with 22 seconds left.

Marywood travels to nearby Clarks Summit University Wednesday night (8:00 pm) looking for its third straight win.
