Pacers Escape CSU, Hold Playoff Fate in Own Hands

Clarks Summit, Pa. - Thomas Swartz hit four free throws in the final minute of play and Jeremy Ringland had a game high 22 points as Marywood continued their run towards the CSAC post season with a 77-73 win at Clarks Summit University Wednesday night.  Marywood, now winners of three straight, improves to 14-10 overall and 9-8 in the league.

Swartz finished with 19 points and was 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. He currently ranks second in all of Division III for free throw percentage (93.4). Swartz completed the game's lone double-double with a game best 11 rebounds.  Ringland was 10-of-14 from the floor to account for his game high effort.

Clarks Summit had four players in double figures including 18 from John McCloskey.

Marywood held an early 24-14 lead at the midway point of the first half after a Jack DeGroot three pointer.  After being up nine (30-21) with just under seven minutes left, the host Defenders closed the gap and would get a three from Steven Marvin with eight ticks left in the half to give the hosts a 40-39 lead at the break, just their first lead since being up 6-4 in the early going.

Ringland knocked down the Pacers' first six points of the second half as the two teams battled for control.  Tied at 45, Marywood capped a 5-0 run with a trey from Swartz to take a 50-45 lead.

Marywood would maintain their lead until McCloskey nailed a long ball to knot the game at 53-all, and the two teams would battle closely for the next several minutes until Marywood used another short run to give themselves a six-point edge (64-58).

Down seven (69-62) with just over five to play, the hosts closed the gap once again and eventually tied the game at 73-73 on a free throw from Preston Huckaby with 33 seconds left.  But Huckaby would miss the second free throw that would have given CSU a one point lead, and Swartz made the final four free throws of the game, including two with four seconds left, to seal the win for the Pacers.

Clarks Summit (1-23) remains winless in 17 league games on the year after the close loss.

Marywood now holds their playoff fate in their own hands.  A win Saturday over Immaculata guarantees the Pacers their first playoff berth since the 2010-11 season.  Tied with Keystone with identical league marks, the Pacers hold the tiebreaker over the Giants by virtue of a season two game sweep.  A loss to Immaculata and a Keystone win Saturday would give the Giants the final playoff berth.

Keystone travels to Rosemont Saturday for a 1:00 pm match-up. Marywood and the Mighty Macs will tip-off in Scranton at 2:00 pm.
