Hessling Nets Career Highs; Pacers Secure No. 4 Seed in CSACs

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Marywood University was unable to come back from a large halftime deficit in a 79-71 loss to Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Griffins' victory settled top spot in the CSAC North Division, and Marywood booked itself a ticket to the CSAC playoffs as the No. 4 seed. 

Natasha Hessling set a career highs with 23 points and 15 rebounds. It is her fourth double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Hessling made 10 of 18 shots from the floor to add to her .549 field goal percentage that is on pace for a school record. 

Gab Giordano finished with 16 points. She moves into No. 13 in school history with 1,017 points. 

Aryah Aungst came off the bench to supply 13 points with three 3-pointers. 

Marywood shot 37 percent from the field for the game. Gwynedd Mercy finished with 42.2 percent shooting after making 58.6 percent in the first half. The Griffins performed well from the charity stripe with 14 of 16 made (87.5 percent), while the Pacers made less than half of their first half attempts and finished at a 55.6 percent clip. 

With two conference games left, Marywood will face either Centenary University or Rosemont College in the CSAC first round on Feb. 19. 

Marywood started off cold, allowing the Griffins to score seven of the first eight points of the contest. Erika Bistran evened the score at nine apiece with a 3-point shot with 4:57 left in the first quarter. Aungst made a long-range shot to cut a deficit down to one with 70 seconds remaining. The Griffins piled on a 7-1 run to close the quarter for a 28-21 lead. 

Gwynedd Mercy hammered the Pacers 23-8 in the second quarter. The Griffins scored seven-straight points before Hessling made a layup for the Pacers first points of the frame with 5:42 left. Gwynedd Mercy followed that with an eight-point run that was capped by a Denise Sacco trey to extend the lead to 20 points. Over the course of seven minutes, the Griffins outscored Marywood 22-3. 

The Pacers set their sights for a comeback by outscoring the Griffins 22-14 in the third quarter, led by eight points by Giordano. 

Marywood brought the deficit to as close as seven points when Catie Nealon drained a 3-pointer with 4:28 left in the came, sizing the Griffins' lead down to 71-64.  Gwynedd Mercy put together five straight points that were bookended by an Olivia Rosema 3-pointer with 1:41 left. 

Gwynedd Mercy's Julianna Hoisington had a team-best 19 points. Alison Szysko had 13 points, and Chyanne Fine posted a dozen. 

The CSAC schedule resumes on Wednesday when Marywood heads up Route 6 to take on Clarks Summit University on Wednesday. The Pacers close their regular season at Cedar Crest College next weekend.
