Baseball Wins Season Opener, Game Two Called

Fishkill, N.Y. - Rookie Joey Castellani pitched four innings of scoreless, one-hit relief to lead Marywood University to a 3-2 win over Mount Saint Mary College in the baseball season opener for both teams.  Game two was called due to inclement weather in the second inning.

Castellani took over for starter Pasquale Mandarano, who pitched the opening three innings and allowed one earned run (two total) on one hit.  Castellani struck out four to get the first win of his collegiate career.

The host Knights took a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly, and doubled that lead in the third on another sacrifice fly that resulted in a unearned run crossing the plate.

After five scoreless innings, Marywood's offense came alive in the sixth as the Pacers plated all three of their runs for the comeback win.

Trevor Powers walked to open the inning, and Jake Schuster's RBI double to left brought the speedy Powers home to make it 2-1.  Schuster would move to third on a wild pitch and would come home two batters later on a fielder's choice to second as the Pacers tied the game.

Mitchell Clemons would then bring home the winning run with a single to center, scoring Scott Becker who had reached on the aforementioned fielder's choice and stole second a play later.

Schuster was one of five Pacers with hits on the day with Clemons going 2-for-3.  Schuster, Becker and Clemons accounted for Marywood's three RBIs. The Knights had just two hits in the loss as Castellani and Mandarano each allowed one in the season opening victory.

Marywood (1-0) is scheduled for a doubleheader at Wells College (N.Y.) next Saturday.
