Men's Lacrosse Erases Five-Goal Deficit in Final 16 Minutes for Exciting Win

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University came back from five goals down in the final 16 minutes to upend Mount Saint Mary College 12-11 on a rainy Saturday in men's lacrosse. The Pacers scored six straight goals in a seven-minute span to even the contest.
 
Matt Casto scripted the game-winning goal with 6:05 remaining. The Pacers' defense held off the Knights for the final six minutes, and Vinny Biancardi made a huge save with 64 seconds left to curb Mount Saint Mary's hopes for overtime.
 
Rob Maini finished with four goals and six ground balls for the Pacers. Casto's game-winner secured a hat trick.
 
Biancardi made nine saves for his second victory of the season, in addition to three ground balls.
 
Austin Maylor tallied a pair of goal, and Zach Vaughan totaled two assists. Defensively, the Pacers picked up the pace with eight ground balls from Ryan Matthews and three caused turnovers from Luke McFadden.
 
Saturday's rematch between the Knights and Pacers was a reverse image of last year's matchup. Mount Saint Mary came back from six goals down in the second half to down the Pacers in Newburgh, N.Y.
 
Marywood opened the game with the first two goals of the game before the Knights rattled off eight straight goals over a 24-minute time frame. Mount Saint Mary took a 7-2 lead at halftime when Ryan Maraio scored from Nicholas Graziano with seven seconds left in the second period.
 
Mount Saint Mary seemed to be rolling in the third quarter when it opened the scoring with a Danny Kugler netter to take its largest lead of the game (6-2). A mere 21 seconds later, Maini scored the first of a pair of goals to chip into the Mount Saint Mary lead. Graziano had the last shades of life for the Knights when his goal with 1:51 left in the third put his team ahead 10-5.
 
Austin Maylor kickstarted the comeback with a man-up goal with six seconds left in that period. Casto opened the fourth when picked up a ground ball off of a Christopher Doerr save and redirected it into cut the deficit to 10-7 with 13:30 left.
 
Maini twice took advantage of a turnover on the Mount Saint Mary to slim the Knights' lead to one with 10:21 left.  Matt Mitarotonda evened the game at 10 apiece on a fast break chance with 9:45. Maylor gave the Pacers their first lead since the early goings at 8:31. Twenty-one seconds later, Mount Saint Mary's Dylan De Meo rifled a shot to square it at 11 apiece.
 
Casto's game-winning gave following a Casey Sullivan hustle to pick up a ground ball off of the faceoff and Mitarotonda ground ball pickup.
 
Marywood (2-1) hosts King's on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
